چکیده

Whereas much work has been done to describe N -dimensional orientations in terms of principal rotations, these developments have not been extended to the descriptions of N -dimensional kinematics. For threedimensional rotations the angular velocity can be related to derivatives of the principal angle and axis. Following a similar procedure this paper develops the kinematics for N -dimensional rotations in terms of the derivatives of the principal planes and angles. It is shown that the components of the angular velocity lying in the principal planes are related to the derivative of the principal angles and the out-of-plane components are related to the derivative of the vectors spanning the principal planes. Additionally, the kinematic optimal control problem for N -dimensional reorientation is solved while minimizing a quadratic function of the angular velocity. The optimal angular velocity is found to be a constant rate rotation in each of the principal planes relating the initial and final orientations, where optimal refers to minimizing the rotational displacement in a defined fashion.

Kinematic Mapping and Forward Kinematic Problem of a 5-DOF (3T2R) Parallel Mechanism with Identical Limb Structures

The main objective of this paper is to study the Euclidean displacement of a 5-DOF parallel mechanism performing three translation and two independent rotations with identical limb structures-recently revealed by performing the type synthesis-in a higher dimensional projective space, rather than relying on classical recipes, such as Cartesian coordinates and Euler angles. In this paper, Study's...

General n-Dimensional Rotations

This paper presents a generalized approach for performing general rotations in the n-Dimensional Euclidean space around any arbitrary (n-2)-Dimensional subspace. It first shows the general matrix representation for the principal n-D rotations. Then, for any desired general n-D rotation, a set of principal n-D rotations is systematically provided, whose composition provides the original desired ...

Minimum distance and optimal transformations on SO(N )

The group of special (or proper) orthogonal matrices, SO(N), is used throughout engineering mechanics in the analysis and representation of mechanical systems. In this paper, a solution is presented for the optimal transformation between two elements of SO(N). The transformation is assumed to occur during a specified finite time, and a cost function that penalizes the transformation rates is ut...

On the Rigid Rotation Concept in n-Dimensional Spaces∗

A general mathematical formulation of the n × n proper Orthogonal matrix, that corresponds to a rigid rotation in n-dimensional real Euclidean space, is given here. It is shown that a rigid rotation depends on an angle (principal angle) and on a set of (n−2) principal axes. The latter, however, can be more conveniently replaced by only 2 Orthogonal directions that identify the plane of rotation...

Aas 05-481 Nonlinearity Index of the Cayley Form

The nonlinearity index is a measure of the nonlinearity of dynamical systems based on computing the initial-condition sensitivity of the statetransition matrix. The Cayley form is a representation for dynamical systems that relates their motion to N -dimensional rotations. The generalized coordinates of the system are used to define an N -dimensional orientation, and a set of quasi velocities i...
